The Dutch State and two drinking water companies are acting unlawfully by failing to do everything reasonably possible to prevent underage children from being placed in a situation where they do not have sufficient access to drinking water. This was ruled by the Court of Appeal in The Hague on 19th March 2024.

Water Disconnections for Households Should Be Banned Across Europe

In many parts of Europe, it remains possible to cut off the water supply for individuals and families who do not have the means to pay for it. Water disconnections in response to a household’s inability to pay are contrary to human rights law, preventing those affected from living a dignified life and leading to further social exclusion and increased health risks.

State of Housing Rights

 
The Right to housing is constitutionally guaranteed in Art. 23§3 which ensures that “everyone has the right to enjoy a life in conformity with human dignity”. The right to decent accommodation is understood as part of this right to dignity. Indeed, Art. 23§3 continues by stating that “towards this end, the law, the decree or rules established under Art. 134 guarantees, taking into account the corresponding obligations, economic, social, and cultural rights of which they determine the conditions for their implementation”.

Towards a just transformation: climate crisis and the right to housing

The Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, Mr. Rajagopal, presented his report, "Towards a Just Transformation: Climate Crisis and the Right to Housing", to the Human Rights Council in Geneva on March 8, 2023. UN Special Rapporteur finds that millions are failing to access social protection entitlements

On the 24th of June 2022 Olivier De Schutter, UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, presented his report on Non-take-up of rights in the context of social protection [1]in the UN Human Rights Council’s 50th Session. The report finds that millions of people, including some of the world’s most marginalized groups, are unable to benefit from the very systems that have been set up to protect them.

Report COVID-19 and the right to adequate housing: impact and the way forward

 

The UN special rapporteur, Balakrishnan Rajagopal, presented to the 75th session of the General Assembly (15th September) his new report on COVID-19 and the right to adequate housing. The main point of this text was to underscore the right to housing as a fundamental right, as far as housing has emerged as a key defence against COVID-19.
