On 29th January 2021, Housing Rights Watch held a thematic meeting about evictions in a Covid 19 landscape.
The crisis caused by the pandemic goes far beyond its strict health dimension, configuring itself as a social, economic and political crisis, that requires a comprehensive approach. The economic impact of the Covid 19 crisis has put many people at risk of homelessness and public authorities reacted swiftly to prevent a wave of people from losing their homes. A suspension of rental evictions of varying durations and other measures were announced in many countries and periodically extended. However, there is a risk of a sudden and exponential increase of homeless people as the moratoria on evictions slowly ends.
Protecting vulnerable tenants and homeowners from being evicted into homelessness must be a priority for the EU Member States. Therefore, it is extremely relevant to continue monitoring the legislative measures aimed at avoiding evictions during the health crisis and to share innovative and effective initiatives. During the meeting, we did country-specific updates from nine European countries, with special attention to how European and international legal instruments may be used.
The following summary will provide a run-through of the main points.
As part of Housing Rights Watch activities, we continue to think together on legal tools to support advocacy and litigation in this field so please, share any new developments with us.
