The latest report by the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing examines the critical relationship between land and housing, calling for a fundamental shift in how land is understood and governed.
“Land must be reframed as an essential component of the right to adequate housing,” the report argues—moving away from treating land merely as a commodity for speculation, or as a state asset detached from the rights and needs of those who live on it.
The Special Rapporteur reviews laws, policies, and practices from around the world, highlighting examples of equitable land management and inclusive urban planning. The report concludes with a set of key recommendations, urging States to ensure that land governance and housing policies fully respect human rights and prioritise social justice over market interests.
